🤍 How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photography Session

A gentle guide to help you feel calm, confident, and ready

Are you preparing for a newborn photography session and wondering what to expect? Whether this is your first baby or you’ve done this before, it's natural to have questions. As a newborn photographer in Lincolnshire, I’m here to guide you every step of the way.

Here’s everything you need to know to feel relaxed and fully ready for your baby’s session — from when to book, what to bring, and how to make the most of this beautiful experience.

🗓️ When to Book Your Newborn Photography Session

The best time to photograph newborns is typically between 5 and 14 days old. Babies are sleepier, more settled, and still enjoy being curled up in those cozy poses we all love.

👉 Top tip: Book your newborn session during your second trimester to secure your spot, especially if you're due in busy months like spring or autumn. We’ll set a provisional date and confirm once your baby arrives.

📦 What to Bring to Your Newborn Photoshoot

My sessions are intentionally simple and baby-led — no heavy posing, no flashy props, just beautiful, honest moments. I don’t supply wraps or outfits, so I ask parents to bring their baby’s wardrobe with them.

Here’s what to bring:

  • 1–2 neutral or soft-coloured baby outfits (knitted rompers, plain onesies, or soft textures work well)

  • Nappies and wipes

  • Feeding supplies (bottle, formula, or expressed milk if applicable)

  • A dummy (optional, but helpful for soothing if your baby takes one)

  • A light swaddle or muslin, if you have one you love

  • Snacks for you — sessions can last up to 2–3 hours

If you're unsure what to bring, I'm always happy to guide you on outfit choices that photograph beautifully.

🕊️ What to Expect During Your Session

At Willow Light Studio, I offer baby-led newborn sessions — which means we follow your baby’s pace. No rush. No pressure. Just a calm environment where baby (and you!) can relax.

Your newborn photoshoot may include:

  • Sweet posed and wrapped images of your baby

  • Natural baby-led photos (awake or asleep)

  • Parent and family portraits in soft, flattering light

  • Optional sibling shots

Sessions take place in my natural light studio in Lincolnshire, or occasionally in your home by request.

☁️ What If Baby Is Awake or Fussy?

This is completely normal and absolutely okay. Every baby is different. Some sleep soundly; others stay wide-eyed the whole time. I allow plenty of time for feeds, changes, and cuddles so there’s no pressure.

My aim is to gently capture your baby’s unique personality and those tender connections — no matter how the day unfolds.

👩‍👧 Including Mum in the Photos

Many mothers shy away from the camera in those early weeks — but I promise, this is a moment you’ll never regret capturing.
You don’t need to do or be anything extra. Come as you are.

Soft lighting, natural poses, and neutral outfits help you feel your best. And most importantly, I’m here to support you through it all. You can also have access to my client wardrobe which are the same dresses used in maternity shoots. They're really stretchy and very comfortable so perfect for both sessions.

🌦 Studio Natural Light — Whatever the Weather

Most of my newborn photography sessions take place in my soft, natural light studio, styled with calming tones and cozy textures. If you're hoping for natural light and the UK weather doesn't cooperate, no worries — my studio gives us that same soft glow even on a grey day.

💬 Final Thoughts: You Don’t Need to Be Perfect

You don’t need to prep endlessly, or show up with a perfectly calm baby. Just bring yourselves, and trust that I’ll guide you gently through it all.

Because these days — the tiny toes, sleepy yawns, skin-to-skin cuddles — pass in the blink of an eye. Your photos will be a beautiful way to remember just how small and loved they truly were.
